Supported platforms

Moodle and OpenLMS, hosted on AWS

We deploy, host, and customise two world-class open-source platforms on AWS, tailored to your institution's exact requirements.

OpenLMSOpenLMS

OpenLMS

Open LMS is a highly configurable learning management system that scales to the goals of your organisation. Helping thousands of customers globally (from industry to higher education), it provides a familiar experience for learners, cutting-edge ecosystem tools, in-depth reporting, in-app authoring, and compliance training.

As the world's largest commercial provider of hosting and support for open-source Moodle™, supported by AWS, Open LMS helps organisations deliver great learning experiences without the complexity. Learn more at openlms.net.

Moodle

Moodle

One of the most popular open-source LMS platforms, Moodle empowers educators to create fully customisable learning environments. When hosted on the cloud, it benefits from instant scalability and enhanced performance, allowing institutions to deliver dynamic courses without the limitations of on-premise hosting.

With over 240 million users worldwide, Moodle continues to be a leading choice for educational institutions looking for an adaptable and user-friendly LMS.

Benefits of running your LMS on AWS

Why cloud-hosted

Why host Moodle on AWS

Many educational institutions struggle with outdated infrastructure that can't keep up with growing demands. Cloud hosting solves this.

Instant scalability

Expand as needed without downtime: compute scales to meet enrolment peaks, then scales back.

Cost-efficiency

Pay-as-you-go model reduces overhead, with no upfront hardware investment or idle capacity.

Enhanced security

Your LMS sits inside a private AWS network, and learner data can stay in South Africa in af-south-1, the Cape Town region.

Global accessibility

Students access courses from anywhere with an internet connection, while AWS regions keep latency low.

Automatic updates

Always run on the latest version without manual effort: CloudZA handles patches and upgrades.

Tailored for you

Questions

Moodle hosting, answered.

Can you move our existing Moodle site, or do we need to start again?

Either works. Both LMS case studies on this page were existing Moodle environments moved off on-premise infrastructure onto AWS: BizzCo from a shared server in a data centre, and Stellenbosch Business School from hosting that could not meet its scale and data residency needs. If you're starting fresh, the same working session maps out your setup.

Can our learner data stay in South Africa?

Yes. Your LMS can run in the AWS Africa (Cape Town) Region, af-south-1. Stellenbosch Business School's Moodle platform serves 2000+ students from af-south-1, and its POPIA compliance is met through that local data residency.

Should we choose Moodle or OpenLMS?

Moodle is the open-source platform, fully customisable to your learning environment. Open LMS builds on open-source Moodle with commercial hosting and support, and adds ecosystem tools, in-depth reporting, in-app authoring and compliance training. We deploy, host and customise both on AWS, and the working session is where you weigh which fits your institution.

Who looks after patches and upgrades?

We do. Patches and upgrades are handled for you, so your LMS stays on the latest version without manual effort from your team.

How does a cloud LMS cope with enrolment peaks and load shedding?

Compute scales with demand instead of being fixed to one server. BizzCo's Moodle now scales compute to meet enrolment peaks, and moving off on-premise hardware ended its load-shedding disruptions.

Can the LMS look and work the way our institution does?

Yes. We tailor Moodle and OpenLMS environments to your institution, from the user interface to backend configuration.

What does the AWS setup look like?

It follows your scale and availability needs. BizzCo runs Moodle on Amazon EC2 with Amazon RDS, inside a VPC on a Well-Architected Landing Zone, with backups to Amazon S3. Stellenbosch Business School, which needs 24/7 high availability, adds a load balancer, Amazon CloudFront, FSx for Lustre for shared files, Aurora PostgreSQL, ElastiCache and a CI/CD pipeline.
